Taxonomies are important for the media. They help journalists and editors to organize their content in a way that is efficient and easy to find. Taxonomies are also important for the audience, since they can search through content in a way that is more accurate than any other search engine. There are many different types of taxonomies, but one of the most popular ones is what we call ontology. An ontology can be used to classify text into different categories, such as blog posts or news articles. Ontologies also have relationships with each other so that they can be organized in a hierarchical fashion. Keep reading Taxonomies Are Important For The Media. How can we represent news sets consistently? Only the names of countries are already a problem, let alone the concepts and ideas for which we have numerous synonyms and alternative ways of expressing them. The answer is: using “normalized” keywords.
Here we can take a small step in the use of terminology (a table later, will help us to consolidate ideas): a normalized keyword is called a descriptor or also a preferred indexing term.
Those can be obtained from the automatic analysis of the news from the first supply of keywords; but we need standardized terms to express the synthesis of the news in particular and, in addition, the content of the images and videos that accompany them.
For this, we need previously agreed-on terms to always represent the same concepts with the help of descriptors. The instrument that facilitates terminological control through the use of descriptors is documentary languages (also called, for this reason, controlled languages).
The point is that there are very different documentary languages (DL from now on) according to their functions and their complexity, as we will see below. The problem is that due to the liberality with which their respective names are used, there is often considerable confusion.

The Content Taxonomy has evolved over time to provide publishers with a consistent and easy way to organize their website content. For example, to differentiate “sports” vs. “news” vs. “wellness” material. IAB Tech Lab’s Content Taxonomy specification provides additional utility for minimizing the risk that content categorization signals could generate sensitive data points about some things. Some examples are race, politics, religion, or other personal characteristics that could result in discrimination.
What are the most common uses cases of this API? This API is useful to help those companies with a large amount of data that needs sorting by category.
