London City Airport is an airport located in the city of London, the capital of the United Kingdom. It is an airport designed for takeoffs and landings in a short space (STOL), a single runway. It is located in the borough of Newham, east London, and was built between 1987 and 1988 by the construction company Mowlem.
The first proposal to build it was made in 1981, and by 1987 it was officially opened by the Queen. The first two airlines to operate at the airport were Brymon Airways and Eurocity Express, later renamed London City Airways. The formerly operated flights to Paris, while the latter operated routes to Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
City Airport is the fifth busiest airport in the city of London, after Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, and Stansted airports. Its main purpose is to provide quick access to the financial district of the city, known as the City of London. That is why it has a large passenger traffic and multiple tourism and airline companies operate in its surroundings.
Technology has provided multiple tools that facilitate real-time information sharing, which is a key element of the industry. Flight Data APIs, for example, allow airport and flight information to be integrated into all types of platforms, which is key for web development and traveler applications.
