Google admits that it wanted to buy GitHub

The negotiations for the sale of GitHub may have aroused the interest of another company, in addition to Microsoft. At an event organized by Fortune, Diane Greene, responsible for the cloud computing area of Google, hinted that the company would like to have acquired the platform.

“I would not have minded buying them, but that’s fine,” Greene summarized. Despite the statement, the executive did not confirm whether Google ever made a specific proposal for GitHub, which was acquired by Microsoft for 7,500 million dollars.

With nearly 85 million repositories…

The service is used by programmers and companies such as Amazon, Facebook and Google itself. In his speech, Greene showed his concern for the future of the company’s projects that are hosted on GitHub.

“I really hope that Microsoft can keep them totally neutral,” he said. This fear was also shared by many developers, who began looking for alternatives to GitHub after the announcement of the sale.

Greene also commented on the protests of Google employees against agreements with the Pentagon

The group asked the company to stop developing technologies that support the “war business”.

The request was accepted and, in Greene’s opinion, the decision will be followed by other companies. “Any company with a large contingent of artificial intelligence researchers needs to do this because researchers will want to know how their technology is being used” he said.
