So… corporate taxonomy is exactly what? It is difficult to define the term “taxonomy,” despite the efforts of some authors. The majority of definitions offered thus far apply to documentary languages, including thesauri, classification schemes, and other types of controlled vocabularies, ranging from rings of synonyms to ontologies and catalogs of authorities. We will briefly discuss this today in the section Check This API: Methodology for the Preparation of Corporate Taxonomies, where we will also introduce you to the IAB Tech Lab’s Content Taxonomy.
Corporate Taxonomy
An organization’s context, target audience, and content are what we can see in a corporative taxonomy, which enables the representation of all types of informational items for the development of various functions in corporative sites, such as content organization, and searching navigation, and competitive intelligence, etc.
In the context of project management, a methodology for designing taxonomies is laid out, paying particular attention to the steps that must be completed: strategic planning, taxonomy construction, categorization of informational objects, application and presentation of the taxonomy, and the cycle of evaluation and continuous improvement.
With characteristics and examples of several existing applications, the current market for computer solutions for these processes is growing.
Methodology for the Preparation of Corporate Taxonomies
The creation of a corporate taxonomy must be approached as a properly planned, managed, and controlled project. Carrying it out requires a significant investment of financial and human resources and, therefore, it is essential to adopt a strategic attitude and approach the project with the rigor necessary to achieve the objectives at the lowest price.
The project should be carried out by a team made up of individuals with different skills, knowledge, and points of view: experts in the area of library and information science, in the organization’s field of action, knowledgeable about how the organization works, computer scientists, graphic designers, management positions, representatives of the various departments or units of the organization, etc. The most important thing, however, is to get the commitment of all the agents that participate; everyone must understand the importance of what is happening, take responsibility, and be willing to participate.
As in any project, there are groups of main activities that must be carried out in an orderly sequence. These large groups of activities or stages are five: strategic planning; structure construction; content categorization; application and presentation, evaluation cycle and continuous improvement, and, finally, dissemination.

The Content Taxonomy has evolved over time to provide publishers with a consistent and easy way to organize their website content. For example, to differentiate “sports” vs. “news” vs. “wellness” material. IAB Tech Lab’s Content Taxonomy specification provides additional utility for minimizing the risk that content categorization signals could generate sensitive data points about things like race; politics, religion, or other personal characteristics that could result in discrimination.
While the Content Taxonomy itself doesn’t constitute sensitive data; – it simply categorizes page content, and does not on its own reveal information about a user –; there are few technical controls preventing taxonomy nodes from associating with individual IDs to build behavioral profiles over time based on content preferences.
