In no other German city are so many startups founded as in Berlin. This is evident from a recent analysis.
Statistically, one to two new startups are created in Berlin every day or a new one every 14 hours. Some of this will subsequently turn into a successful business. This is the result of a new study carried out by the Institute for Innovation and Technology in VDI or VDE Innovation plus Technik GmbH together with the Startup Detector platform. Also according to the “Startup Barometer January 2019” of EY, Berlin is the undisputed startup stronghold in Germany.
Numbers of startups in Berlin
37 startups are newly founded on average in Berlin every month. In total, 130 startups per month are registered throughout Germany. In terms of investment volume, Berlin ranks 18th worldwide, according to NYU’s “Rise of the Global Startup City” report.
The Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2018, comes to the conclusion that Berlin is currently on the way from a startup city to a so-called scale-up city. The latter is characterized by higher investment volumes and more mature startups.
Startup founders are young and male
Among the companies founded there are many software companies and also many fintech and companies in the field of blockchain and crypto trade. As expected, the founders of the startups are usually from a younger generation especially in Berlin. So a resident founder is on average 35 years old. And the typical startup founder is male. Only about 15 percent of the companies are founded by women. The startups are rarely active in their own offices, but especially in co-working spaces, of which there are so many in the capital.
The figures for their analysis have won the study makers from various databases such as the commercial register. Company publications and media reports also flowed into the survey.
